Monitoring Data Center Temperatures

Monitoring Data Center Temperatures and temperatures in IDF closets are some of the most important responsibilities you will be given.

During my time in a manufacturing environment I was given the task of Monitoring Data Center Temperatures with the additional task of using the same system in our IDF closets as well. So I went looking for a temperature alert sensor that could be easily deployed over wireless and remotely monitored and maintained.

The scope of the project was as follows:

  • Real time temperature and humidity monitoring for a small data center and 13 IDF closets dispersed over a campus of approximately 400,000 SF.
  • Maintain records for up to 1 month
  • provide escalation in the event that the first responder fails to respond.
  • Web interface for Security Personnel to monitor remotely.
  • Budget – Under $5000.00.

I completed this project using devices from a company called Temperature Alert.

Devices from Temperature Alert for monitoring data center temperatures are capable of hosting various sensors including flood, humidity, and temperature. They include a wired and wireless interface for easy network connection and can be configured through a web browser interface. These are stand alone units that can be deployed and monitored remotely without the need for additional software.

The device I used was a WIFI connected device that I attached to our wireless infrastructure. Since there were so many of them in our environment, we really needed a central management solution so I built a Web APP using PHP/HTML/ and dumped data into a MySQL Database. This was hosted on a Solaris Virtual Machine provided by IT.

I will provide the Web APP To anyone who would like to use it for a small fee – $20 . It will require knowledge of a web hosted environment and PHP/HTML programming as well as some experience with MySQL. I can also setup the server for you if you can give me remote access. The fee for this would be $150.00.

The system worked flawlessly and I came in under budget:

$4875.00 for 15 Devices including the flood sensors.

This is a great deal on the complete package:

Temperature Alert Devices for Monitoring Data Center Temperatures

So here are the individual devices I ordered and a screen shot of the Web App I developed. If you would like more information just email me at sales@improvisedtech.com
